If you have been using Joomla 4, it's time to update to Joomla 5.
Joomla 5 is a smooth, one-click update for Joomla 4 users. There are no major changes in this version. All Joomlashack extensions are fully compatible with Joomla 5.
Why is Joomla 5 Arriving Now?
Joomla 5 is a scheduled release, almost exactly two years after Joomla 4 was first released.
We think this is a good idea from the Joomla team and is similar to the approach taken by WordPress and other projects. Previously Joomla releases were big undertakings that took several years. Now Joomla releases arrive on a regular schedule. If features are ready on time, they are included. If they're not ready, they wait for the next scheduled release.
In the future, you can expect regular small releases of Joomla 5 and then in two years, Joomla 6 will be here.
Joomla 3, 4, and 5
Here at Joomlashack we'll continue to support Joomla 3 and Joomla 5.
- Joomla 3: We'll provide support until at least August 2024.
- Joomla 5: This will be the primary version for new development and features.
Joomla 5 is a recommended update for everyone using Joomla 4. So from now on our documentation and articles will refer only to Joomla 3 and Joomla 5.
The Backwards Compatibility Plugin
Joomla 5 has a Compatibility plugin to make it easier to move to Joomla 5. This plugin provides backward compatibility between Joomla 4 and Joomla 5. You don't have to do anything to make this work because the Compatibility plugin is automatically active on Joomla 5 sites. Please don't turn this plugin off.
